Choosing staple lifters and tack removers

Choose by the fastener you can see

Start with the shape of the metal you are removing. A staple bridge calls for an approach under the crown. An upholstery tack has a head and a single shank. Look at the clearance on both sides before picking a fork or claw.

Compare blade reach

The Osborne 124 has a 2¼-inch blade. Its 124-12 sibling extends that to 8¼ inches for obstructed access. Compare the path to the fastener before giving up the smaller body of the regular 124.

What if the crown snaps?

Switch to a tool that can grip an exposed leg. A bent-nose staple plier can take over when there is too little crown left for the lifter.

Which measurement helps when the handle hits the frame?

Compare the working blade length and the path from your hand to the crown. The full length includes the handle.

What should I compare for fasteners under a corded edge?

Expose the metal in the groove first. Osborne describes the 710 for reaching staples left inside that channel.
